Spam Whackers was Hacked

Filed under: Blog Spam — Connie @ 8:38 pm

Spam-Whackers got hacked last Sunday or Monday.  I haven’t been able to determine who the hacker was but I have some leads.  I’m 99% certain it was a comment spammer.

Before jumping to conclusions this happened with the latest update from WP. Any site can be hacked.

Blog Spammers

Filed under: Blog Spam — Connie @ 5:53 pm

In the last few months since I quit requiring registration to comment, the registration has increased. They register but do not comment. Most of the registrations come from a .ru TLD. I think that is Russia but not sure.

Stupid Comment Spam

Filed under: Blog Spam — Connie @ 3:49 am

I rarely view comment spam anymore. This one slipped by Akismet which meant I got a e-mail about a new post and the post was held in moderation for my approval. Of course I’m deleting it as spam, but since it was so stupid I decided to post the message. This one is different from most comment spam I get.

Name: Real Adsense Blog Makes Money » Blog Archive » I have been leaving comments on other blogs, and I have been, in some cases, leaving links to to my site.

URI: been-leaving -comments-on-other-blogs-and-i-have-been-in-some-cases-leaving- links-to-to-my-site

IP: Date: April 10, 2007[…]

What Does Rel=”NoFollow” Mean? […]

It would appear that they are getting what they wanted. A link to their site. However, I’m going to add the rel=”nofollow” attribute to their links.

The spammer gets no link juice for their spam. I get something to post about. I think this is one of those rare occasions where I came out the winner.

Look at the URL. I don’t think I have ever seen one that Spammy.

The links are non working.  Other than the domain name which I changed, the link and anchor text are accurate.

Bad Behavior

Filed under: Blog Spam — Connie @ 1:57 pm

Blog Spam like other forms of spam is an increasing problem. Up until a few weeks ago, I didn’t have a lot of blog spam here. Maybe 2 or 3 per week. Now it’s 5 or so per day, and seems to be growing. I hate to think what popular blogs are getting hit with.

The spam never gets published, because all first time comments are moderated. But as it grows it takes a little more time to read through, and make sure I don’t delete a legitimate comment along with the spam comments.

You can deal with some of this using a .htaccess file. There is always the possibility of blocking a legitimate user with this method so I use it sparingly.

I came across a plug in for Word Press today that looks interesting. An acquaintance on another forum referred to the plug in. The plug in is Bad Behavior.

I did download Bad Behavior, and will give it a try.

Google Docs & Blog Spam

Filed under: Blog Spam — Connie @ 7:27 pm

I’m sure Google does not support blog spam. I have 4 attempts to spam this blog and  each one list google docs as a URL.

Here are a couple of examples.

Name: buy tramadol | URI: | IP: | Date: December 11, 2006

buy tramadol…

Buy tramadol Buy cheap tramadol online. Buy cheap tramadol online. Generic tramadol

Name: buy zoloft | URI: | IP: | Date: December 11, 2006

buy zoloft…

Buy zoloft Buy cheap zoloft online. Buy cheap zoloft online. Generic zoloft…

These spam attempts bypass the registration process but fortunately they do not bypass the fact that all first time post have to be moderated.

Either the URLs were invalid to begin with, or Google has already shut them down.
